I have contacted the people I bought from and as soon as I get their reply I will post either way And Im sure if anyone hears of a litter of colour coming from two grey they are sure to post on here or MD because its got us all interested.
No I didnt get an answer and unfortunately probably wont unless someone in the UK knows what has hapenned with Dave & Lesley. Lesley was quite sick so dont know if they still have dogs. Shame though now we still have to guess
I wanted to resurrect this thread. Many agree that blue to blue neos will never produce black pups. But tawny pups are possible.
What about blue to tawny dogs. They will produce blue, mahogany, and tawny pups??????? But not black.
My blue girl Athena had pups last friday. I am not sure who the father is. We didnt know she was pregnant and was not aware until she showed signs of pregnancy. She had a litter of 9 puppies. 7 boys and 2 girls. 5 tawny and 4 blues. At first I was disappointed to see tawny pups because I was hoping my blue dog Peppe would be the father. But by day 5, these pups were becoming really big. Thick legs and big feet and head. My tawny boy is average size. He would not produce big boned and feet dogs with my average size girl. I began to question the paternity of these pups. If Zeus was the father, mahogany pups should have appeared?? Yes?? Zeus's mother was mahogany. So the mahogany gene is there. its possible Peppe is the father. Phenotype, they are resembling him in size.
I might wait around 4 weeks age and get them dna paternity checked. But for now, I wanted to get this out there.
Yes, this is Athena's first litter. I have searched online for canine paternity dna testing. I have found a few places. This one company charges $36 per dog. That is 12 dogs altogether. The mother, 2 possible sires, and 9 puppies for paternity testing. but back to the question. if a blue girl bred to a tawny boy there should be mahogany? I remember Charina bred a blue girl to a tawny boy and all pups were blue.
Liver or red= bb with Dd or DD Blue= Bbdd or BBdd Tawny= bbdd Black= Kk, KK, or k^br k^br for bridles, with Dd or DD for normal expression of pigment (not coat color) So, tawny is a dilute and a liver. Mahogany is a liver. Though brindles and recessive blacks do throw an odd hook into the formulas, which make for odd happenings; the rules above are true for the majority of the population; aside from genetic anomalies that is. I will speak of generalities, as nothing is concrete in genetics.
So, a mahogany "carries" blue and tawny capabilities. Blue can carry tawny capabilities, depending on the hetero/homozygosity of the B and D series. For instance, Charina's blue was probably a BBdd. Therefore, when bred to an isabella (or tawny respectively) all of the pups will carry Bb, but be blue by Bbdd. If your blue male has a mahogany mother and blue father, you can suspect Bbdd; which means he carries the ability to produce tawny, but not mahogany unless bred to a mahogany female or a black carrying female. So does your female.
Good luck with your litter. I hope you find a better way of separating your female next time.
Keeping my girls separated is a struggle at the moment. Its something I am working on improving next spring. I am looking to build some true kennel fences.
