Hi all. I'm looking for some sort of guide or info of weight gain of my pup. He was taken off his mum at 4 weeks old as she had mastitis so not a great start. I picked him up at 5 1/2 weeks old and put him on Royal Canin dry puppy food but soon changed it as the protein content was too high(32%) , so he has been on adult dry food of 27% protein and 17% oils and fats ( was thinking of lowering to a 22% protein food). At 17 weeks old he weighed 63lbs and now at 22weeks he weighs 87lbs. Are these age / weights average or is he gaining weight too quickly? I'm not concerned about how big he gets as long as he has good levels of fitness and movement. Any guidance would be appreciated. heres a few pics taken today... [ image disabled ]
IMO-Your dog looks fine...Although if it was personally my pup I would thin him down just a bit. But to each his/her own. For example I like to be able to stand over my dog and while looking straight down be able to see the rib cage.
If he was my dog, I would cut his food amount down as opposed to dropping his protein levels again. You were right in the first reduction of protein from his diet, however, you do not want to deprive him of too much protein as it will inhibit proper growth. The veg is a lovely addition to his diet. You can also include green beans. The leaner you keep a growing mastiff, the better.
