Personally, I believe it is hard to find a tawny with good type, just as it is in colored Bullterriers and Fulvo Cervo Corsi. The numbers of dogs is not great, but they are out there. Look around. However, there have been several tawny or color breedings in the Neo community lately that look promising.
Igmuska, I did not know that! What qualtiies seem to be lacking in the tawnies? Do the mahoganies have the same problems? What standards do you feel are best followed for the health and longevity of the Neo (AKC, UKC, etc?) I SO appreciate your information and help, and if it is tiresome to type it out, it would be just as helpful to list books/magazines/any other references. i really do appreciate it. Your help is going a looooong way to helping me make an informed decision. Everyone's input is! And I must thank everyone for not flaming me for losing Beowulf and making a mistake with a bad breeder. Thank you for being such a kind community.
Everyone makes mistakes. If you learn from them, they aren't all for naught. IMO, a lot of tawny dogs (not all) in the US are very plain, and if not, then they have incorrect heads or type, showing their questionable influence. I have also seen some of these colored dogs be a bit on the "snarky" side. I do not think this is a color issue, but a line or relation issue which happens to express the color as well. However, I have seen some good ones, be it young dogs so we'll see how they mature and age. Standards are guidelines. You can not judge health or longevity by the lack of type or adherence to the standard. Familial traits are a better example of the health of a line, not the standard. Unless you are looking for a show dog, I would say decide what you want your dog to look like, and then contact breeders with the type you like and then start researching the breeder and the lines they are working with, be it theirs or some other famous lines. I find good breeders like a lot of questions and will often have several questions of their own, it shows your concern and commitment to the breed.
