So I've read a bunch of junk about how Neo's can be particularly intolerant of other household pets. Any truth to this? Anyone have any stories or info?
Ok I have 5 Neo's they cohabitate with two cats and a Pekinese and three children (yes I consider them household pets as well) ...... I had a Cockatoo as well. The cat's hate drool and probably wish Neo's were extinct although none of my dogs have ever been aggressive with either cat, the cat's on the other hand.... The Pekinese really thinks’ he's not only a Neo but the biggest Neo alive, he fights them, hump's them ( he is nutered ) and all around annoys the hell out of the big dogs ( will make a video one day, it's truly comical ) They have never hurt him once. The bird also thought he was bigger than the Neo's and the Neo's believed him.... He was never harmed. The Children ...... Iggy my youngest at like 5 yrs of age received 4 stitched in his foot after kicking at our Neo because he was licking Iggy's feet and tickling him and when he kicked the dog he cut his foot on the dogs tooth, the dog continued to lick and became notably upset when he realized Iggy was hurt..... Now there are a few Neo's that I wouldn't dare let alone together but as far as any other animals I trust them with anything. Least that's my experience with my crew...
I have two other cats and birds, and a rat. All of my dogs will deal with other peoples dogs and other household pets w/o any issues. Now my dogs ears will perk up if a cat scampers by but other then that they pay them no mind. I truly belief that it is How you raise and introduce your Neo's with other animals that will determine how they will interact. It is You as the owner who needs to teach the dog what is allowed under your roof.
Hi at home I have horses, cows, and a cat. My Neo just grew up with them and like to sleep with the calf...lol on the straw...lol... And sometime she run after the cat but it's just for fun, I mean, if the cat stop running, the dog also stop...so no body can be hurt! My neo loves every kinda pet, including small dogs even if she have never meet them before. I strongly belive that it's all about how you raised youre dog that makes the difference.
He was a stray and his stray time is up and I have entered into an adoption contract with this shelter. I will be picking him up this Saturday (He's 3 hours away) and there are 3 cats at this house.
I know how to properly introduce them, but I'm reading stuff online and its making me anxious and nervous about the introduction. I know I have to keep myself calm and collected as not to stress him out, and the only reason I am even making a big deal about this is because I had a pit once that tore through the house to get the cats and ended up killing one and attacking another.
He acted very indifferent at the shelter (like most shelter dogs do) and he seems to have a lot of potential. He's relatively indifferent to other dogs, as we had him out in a run and he was looking at them and acknowledging their presence, but I was determining his intent by how easily he would be distracted and he easily turns his attention away.
I'm just very excited about this whole thing and I'm nervous because I don't want anything to go wrong.
First of all when you bring Any dog into the house....Be in Neo' or Not-Keep it on a leash. That has happened with Neo's as well. It is not the dogs fault, but more over the Fact that they have prey drive...And a cat is Prey. Do you still have the other two rescue dogs you had?
Yeah I still have them. I'm not a stranger to this kind of thing, so I know if he has a problem with cats it wont have to do with the way I introduce them. He's seemed decent with dogs so far. My only concern is my hound is a ball of energy that eventually goes to humping dogs after about 15 minutes of interaction. And my chihuahua usually hides away in a room upstairs all day but hes a little brat when he wants to be. I'm really not all that worried about it with the dogs, but because of what happened last time (a few years ago) with the Pit, I cant risk endangering the cats in any way.
And I know I need to be cautious but I feel like I'm over-thinking it just because of what happened with the other dog.
lol....You are over thinking it...Buy yourself a teather and put this pup on one.....See how things go. Just know that you Will Not see the True him until he's #1...Feeling Better and #2 after the two week mark. Seems that most dogs take about 2 weeks to show true self in my experience. Good Luck!!! Please take oodles of pictures and keep us posted....I love hearing good Rescue stories!
