What is Everyone's likes and dislikes for making their own? I "borrowed" mine out, so will be making another soon enough, love to hear everyone's idea's...And what they find helpful using. Last time I did not have pig rails, and I will have those this time around. Also I want to make the height of the door opening a bit higher. I also used a pressed parical brd-with the malinite finish (white covering-I'm sure its spelled wrong/sorry)
HOLY CRAP- That's Half the cost I spent on my own las time around. Now I personally like having a solid floor, but really just because I like to cover the thing with plastic so there is No leaks on my floor-But this is Very Interesting......
If you look at the links at the bottom, there are photos of other peoples whelp boxes they made using these plans. One of them just laid a piece of remnant linoleum under the box. You could always just build a platform to attach the sides to as well. I like the door design as well...
Mine fits a double mattress and we lined it with cell insulation which we silliconed shut to stop leaks I actually slept in mine when Moana was in whelp and once Argent was born set up a bed next to it
Nick did go over the top with it but if I had had a larger litter it would be ideal Our cost nothing because we had all the left over material from building the shed
Oh boy Lynn that sounds Awesome! I slept on my dogs matress (eeeeW) when Fenice had her last litter for the 1st three weeks, right next to the Box. But the box was only a 6' X 6' not enough room for sleeping with all of us.
I built mine 6 X 6 and it was plenty roomy. My wife and I taking shifts lived in the box for the first 5 weeks. The only thing I would do different next time is to build adjustable sections to seperate the puppies out so you can accomdate them as they grow and then I had an area for them to potty train in as well. I had a 12" shelf on one side to set puppies under while getting Mom settled in and I used it to hold my stuff like my computer and puppies supplies and things.. Notice that I added the section later to keep them contained after they came out of the box and as they grew I cut out a doorway so I could keep food and water and teach them to potty in to keep the main area cleaner. The last in my wife snoozin..... yes we did live with them for 5 weeks solid.
Now Those are some great pictures!!! Now with the wood, you didn't find it hard to clean un-painted? Could you use it again? I could of used mine again, but got stupid and allowed my sister-in law pit's distroy it....Boo. My only bitch was we never put it a "pig rail" and although in other breeds I never found it as needed....Well Fenice she will just lay on pups, so that will be added. I made my walls 3', and I liked the height, liked the door-Really liked how this crap cleaned up...Honestly.
You can only see a piece of it here, and Grandma Jaz' peeking in to say Hi. Boy she loved the pups, till about 6 weeks...Then she stayed on furniture to keep away from them!!! LMFAO
If you look close youwill notice that the original box is varnished and the board I added when they got bigger didn't get done so it is lighter colored. I actually like the varnish better than the paint, it's a solid coating and paint seems to be somewhat porous.
my whelp box was 5x5 with the "pig rails". I did not paint it. Left it natural. I went to Lowes or Home Depot and bought a remnant roll of Laminate kitchen flooring and rolled it under my box so it wouldnt get thru to my floor. It worked great! then lined with blankets until they started moving around and then lined it with a whelping mat (indoor outdoor carpet basically that I could throw in the wash ..i had 2). and loads of Newspaper. the opening was about 4 inches above the rail and Cena couldnt get her belly over it so we lowered it to the height of the rail. we used a baby gate up against the opening to keep babies in once they were all over the place then the were moved to a different location in the house...16 pups out grew the 5x5 quick!
I do have pics I will find and post when i get a second BUT once pic is on the post when I had my pups...
My hubby just finished building the one Igmuska gave us the link to, I am going to add some pictures asap as well as cost, etc. But over all I really like it. We still need to put some clear coat on it, but its simple.
