What are your thoughts and opinions on why So Many Males in our breed that are Sterile? I have a few thoughts on this and I will share one to get the topic rolling;
1.Too many breedings that are Not selected for proper reasons for Line and inbreeding. Over use of the breeding tool and not culling.
Is there a large number of sterile Neapolitans or is it because many try to breed too early and the male has not developed enough. When I first tested Charlie I was told he was sterile and I did not except my vets findings. I marched him back into the surgery and asked him to try again the result was 89% why you may ask because he had me hoovering over him Im sure and he allowed the sample to be from the middle not in the beginning. The nurse told me (she is a well known breeder of Labs) that she often sees the same mistake and not many query the result. I was glad I did.
wow could be the extreme cold (frozen nuts come to mind) I dont know of anyone here saying their stud is sterile but we havent that many here in the first place. Would be rather annoying importing a dog to find it couldnt produce.
Though inbreeding can drop fertility rates, you would have to wonder why a heavily inbred lines of APBT do not typically suffer the infertility issues seen in some of todays mastiffs. There are several factors which can cause infertility; lack of hormones for viable sperm production, poor environment for sperm development (lack of ability to thermoregulate the testicles), lack of proper pH levels in seminal plasma, liquefaction of semen, hematospermia, or congestive prostatitis (causing urine in the semen).
I hope the new health organization will help study this...
On some not all . No pics will be posted by me. We put our male in an airconditioned building in the summer and out at night when it is cooler. This definately works. It gets hot in the summer here in sweet home Alabama
