I'm really glad to have found your group. We have been owned by Irish Wolfhounds for years. Murphy, who arrived home in May from rescue, is our 1st Neo. He is a real love. He's about 3 & has the worst hip dysplasia we've ever seen! We are doing everything possible to keep him comfortable with pain management. I've been trying to tempt him into the pool but no luck yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks; Maura & Crew
get him on vitamen c..and glacostamine...get another dog that swims...that'll coax him to swim....all our neos swim like fish...if he's a "fetcher" ...throws his objects of desire in the water....start ankle deep and work up
seeing his family unit in and about the water helps too
im john, member 69...hope you've a sense of humor...you'll need it
Maura I'm glad to see you figured it out!!!! Definitely get him on vitamin c as well as glucosomene (human grade..easier to find and most likely cheaper)...that will help out a bunch...Let us know how it goes...It will probley take a month or two to notice effects...But I will be very curious to know!
Murphy is currently getting glucosamine, chondroitin, msm, deramaxx, tramadol, acupunture and I inject him with adaquan once a wk! With all this his hind legs still shake terribly at times. If I got my hands on his breeder I might just be capable of brutality!!! I'll post a picture of our sweety ASAP. He is an amazing fella, with all he's been through, he has the disposition of an angel! IW's are wonderful but I want another Neo! =o) Maura & Crew
Maura it sounds to as though you are doing everything I would recommend. It may be more cost effective to get him on a supplement such as Ani Flex GL- from horse.com It has all that you mentioned PLUS a very high dose of Ester C. Ester C really does cushion those joints. Watch for the side effects with Derramaxx. Can be nasty stuff.
My shepherd is on Deramaxx now...She's been living with athritis her whole life. It seems to be working well...We do do blood to keep an eye on things.
Sounds like you have a great plan of action...If you are still seeing some weakness I may suggest massage therapy as well, alternate with the acupuncture treatments.
