does anyone here have a preference? My understanding is that not all chips will work with all scanners, risking that a lost dog may not get returned even if he is microchipped. I am thinking about the thigh or ear tatoo. Does anyone have any experience with this? [ image disabled ] [ image disabled ]
OK it is true about the scanners but most vets do have a universal reader which very rarely do not read the chip. My only experience is on an imported dog but the majority of countries use again microchips that can be read by these. In Australia they actually tell you that the chip must be able to be read by a list of scanners. Obviously the ones mostly used here. Tattoes which by my experiences do fade after 3 years or so or can be torn off say your dog has unfortunately got into a fight while lost. The thigh would be a better idea. We used to microchip our dogs in Africa but we used to have 3 yearly rabies injections which were free but mandatory and the ink was dark blue. When you went for the 3 year injection normally the one done before was not that visable and the vet was quite glad of the microchip aswell for the records back to the government. If your dog was found not to have a clear tattoe (meaning you probably didnt take it) you would get a hefty fine and the dog was normally PTS. Looking at that ear it seems to have been done in the exact same way.
Most shelters around here have universal scanners. I know home again picks up all chips but avid does not. ( Avid did not pick up Evas AKC chip but Home again did, although on avids website it stated they pick up AKC! not hers though) Now honestly I have worked in vet med for 11 years and if we had a dog with a tattoo I would have no idea what to do to find its home. They are not as common in the US as they use to be. I think that is because of microchips. My opinion is to have your pup microchiped or both, but would not just do a tattoo. Good luck
I like micro-chip, its now more common. Although the tatoo was it a few years back, like Lynn has said it takes more maintenance and many forget about it till the dog is lost....
Are there any long term effects of the chip being under the skin, and also, can it migrate under there? If it moves around for some reason (for example, as the puppy grows, or from trauma) is it possible that even a proper scanner may not be able to read it?
yes it is possible for the chip to move. i have seen it in 2 dog. we are traind to scan in a certain way just incase. The two I saw one was a small breed and one was a medium breed. I always check my dogs every year during annual vax so there are no questions. My English Mastiffs chip is exactaly where we chipped her with no movement and she was chipped at 16 weeks. (she was awake and I was in the room) It is a large needle so if you are going to have him neuter that is when they reccomend it be done, if not it can be done while vax are being done. Good luck
