OK this is a question about post op with a dog I have had my dog operated on this week and I once again (3rd time) after each op had to take the dog back for restitching. Dog has E collar and is penned and is well socialized but withing a few minutes of leaving her she manages to move the E collar and scratch the wound or pull stitches. I asked the vet for something to calm her for a few days which he was not willing is there anything I can give her herbal or otherwise which will help her to calm enough for the wounds to heal Thanks
Now Lynn I have to say that I have NEVER tried anything like this. But I have seen ad's and this same type of plug in at the supply store, maybe that would help. What I use is a lavender oil and I burn it in the dogs room. Seems to help a bit, or maybe its the simple fact that I am calmer and then the dogs because of me.
My recommendation would be to find a naturopathic vet or at least one that is willing to look outside the box (I know, easier said then done.) A lot of the natural remedies have substances that can be toxic if not given in the appropriate doses. (Which is why we ID the substance, purify it and put it in tablets.) Some things you can google, in no particular order: D.A.P. (Dog Appeasing Pheromone), Rescue Remedy, Kava Kava (a word of caution as it has been shown to cause serious liver damage in some people,) Valerian, Gelsemium and Pulsatilla.
The "plug in" thing is likely DAP, not 100% convinced it works, it's spendy, (and it smells like wet chicken to me) but I have some clients that swear by it. Robin
"The "plug in" thing is likely DAP, not 100% convinced it works, it's spendy, (and it smells like wet chicken to me) but I have some clients that swear by it." LMAO!!! WET CHICKEN!!!! Now that's a smell!! I will stick with my lavender..HaHa...That's funny... fyi-I think its pricey too...But I have heard of people using that and just loving it as well.
I found her today after spending over an hour cleaning her face that she has this knack of scratching herself on the shade cloth covering her area. Vet put a lot of stitches in this time after her ripping them out (specialist used disolvable ones) so I will have to pay for them to be removed but at least (fingers crossed) they will stay long enough to do there magic. I find if I talk soothingly to her she did calm down but with the move and everything it is hard to spend 24/7 with her as nothing would get packed. LOL Thanks for the ideas I do think your attitude does have some effect on how dogs react but If had had itching stitches on my eyes I would also want to find a scratching pole
She is going back again tomorrow morning ripped them out again and the other vet gave me some Promex and it worked a treat relaxed her fully (although I had to sit with her for 4 hours just in case it worked in reverse, vet said can happen). She slept and will be ready again tomorrow. Now why he didnt give me that in the first place I dont know. And now another vet bill.
where are the stitches at? cant you put a shirt on her or wrap the area with bandage? sounds like you need to make the e-collar tighter and put the dog in a kennel(inside) on lock down. i would get so pissed at my dog if they acted fools like that and costing me extra money all the time over stitches! maybe the stitches are hurting. can you get some Lidocaine to put over the stitches? Lidocaine is a pain relieving lotion (when i used to work at a vet we would apply it over the stitches to take away the pain after SX.) I actually used it on myself before and it worked for me and im sure you can just buy it online.
She has stitches in the corner of her eye. She had one cherry eye removal and the other (with the stitches) had residue from a previous operation which had a tear so the tear was sewn after a piece clipped out as she had one eye sagging from before. Had to explain but basically lifted that side. She is in her kennel 24/7 and only comes out for cleaning and cream as for the E collar well this is the 3rd one and she somehow manages to get her paw inside. It is the large size and first one the specialist cut it too short so that was the problem but this one is tight. I will take her this morning and ask the vet for lidocaine when I pick her up. Im actually getting annoyed now because since her arrival I have spent $6k and now more today. I was more annoyed with the vet as I asked 3 times for something to put in her eye or something to calm her. She is only 13 months and very playful so we do try to spend time then leave her because if she sees us she rubs her head and bashes her head side to side. I do know she is finding the stitches uncomfortable and we are trying hard just to get her past the initial healing period so that this is the last op. Fingers crossed
If the drugs are helping to calm her, have you considered not putting a cone on her head. My hound had the same problem with his cone...He wound always get it off. I finally just said screw it and left it off...He calmed down and didn't irritate or damage any stitching. He did not like having a cone on his head at all.
Well the other vet gave me promex and she is a different dog and seems to not be bothered at all. He wasnt keen until he had her there yesterday and said she was good when she could see him and then start rubbing when she thought he wasnt looking. LOL She is out of her cage and relaxed and we moved the collar a bit tighter so she cant get her paw in. Fingers crossed she seems much happier today
